COLONNA (Francesco). Hypnerotomachie ou Discours du songe de Poliphile. Paris, Kerver, 1554. In-folio, 164 ff, second edition of Jean Martin’s French translation, similar to the first published in 1546 by Kerver, illustrated with 181 woodcuts, 13 of which are full-page, first attributed to Jean Goujon or Germain Pilon, then Jean Cousin Père, drawing heavily on the Italian engravings that appeared in the 1499 edition. Second French edition of one of the most famous books of the Renaissance. Copy complete with the two erotic engravings, “le sacrifice” p.69 (stained with brown ink) and “Pan” p.121 (crossed out in black ink with a hole in the paper). Later full vellum binding, smooth spine, brown title page.
